Polička is the gateway to the Žďárské vrchy, one of the most picturesque regions in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Historically, it served as a dowry town for Czech queens, and in the 18th century, it was one of the wealthiest towns in East Bohemia. The well-preserved city walls fortified with 19 towers still stand today, with some sections open to the public. The 1,220-meter-long walls encircle the entire historic centre. The square features one of the most beautiful Marian columns in Bohemia and the Baroque town hall which houses the town gallery exhibitions.
The town is dominated by the Church of St. James, where the composer Bohuslav Martinů was born and spent part of his childhood. The Church of St. James with the small room, where Bohuslav Martinů was born, was declared a national cultural monument on 8 February 2010. The room in the tower is open to visitors. The Bohuslav Martinů Centre in Polička features engaging exhibitions dedicated to history, music, glassmaking, and the life and work of Bohuslav Martinů. We also highly recommend making a trip to the nearby Svojanov Castle, located just 17 km outside Polička.
This is the starting point for guided tours which can be booked right here. The tour of a specific section of the town wall includes a climb to the gallery, a walk along part of the gallery, and a visit to the bastion(s), complete with informative commentary about the history and characteristics of this medieval fortification.
Visiting hours: every hour except noon.
The first written mention of the church in Polička appears in a document dated 25 June 1321, in which King John of Luxembourg grants the patronage rights to the parish church in Polička to Queen Elizabeth (more commonly known as Elizabeth Richeza), the widow of King Wenceslaus II.
On the site of the original early Gothic church, likely founded shortly after the town was founded in 1265, a new church was constructed in the mid-14th century and later modified in the Baroque style in the mid-17th century. However, its original appearance is only known from its floor plan and visual representations. It was a three-aisled basilica with a long chancel and a slender tower at the western façade, with the length of the three aisles nearly matching its width. The last remnants that could have aided in more precise reconstructions of the original appearance were destroyed in the great fire of Polička in 1845, which severely damaged the church. Consequently, in 1848, it was decided to demolish it and build a new church, constructed between 1853 and 1865 in the Neo-Gothic style based on plans by engineer Antonín Vach from Pardubice and under the supervision of builder František Schmoranec from Chrudim. The new church was ceremoniously consecrated on 30 July 1865.
If you dare to climb the 192 steps of the church tower, you will reach the birthplace of composer Bohuslav Martinů. His father, a shoemaker by trade, “served as a tower guard here – as a guard against fire day and night”; while the family lived in the tower room. The main features of this modest space retain much of their original character from Bohuslav’s childhood. The tower’s gallery offers a beautiful view of the town (Martinů once compared his tower to a lighthouse).
